Happy Christmas

We had an ice storm Saturday night. When we woke on Sunday, we found all the bushes and trees coated in ice.  The holly bush looked like it was sparkling. We were fortunate in that we didn't lose power because many of our neighbors to the north are still waiting to have their power restored.

As usual, the cats are champion nappers. Dare I say I'm jealous

One of the things I've been working on is a small/baby sized Churn Dash quilt.  I used the pattern in Camille Roskelley's book Simply Retro. Hoping to get it quilted today!

Things are feeling quite Christmasy around here. I'm watching it snow outside as I type this and a white Christmas makes me quite happy indeed.

I wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas.  XO

December check in

I don't know where the time is going. I'm trying not to be so hard on myself about getting everything done before Christmas. I haven't sent any cards out, I've baked zero cookies, and I've made zero gifts. As a busy year winds down, a year that included two moves, two job changes, and a host of ups and downs, I'm trying to be more patient with myself, and take the time to just be. Moving into 2014, I want to practice more of this.  Because to just be, feels good.

The kitties have been doing a lot of this.  Napping with   on each other.

It is very, very wintery in my neck of the woods. It has been snowing all weekend. I got my exercise in today as I shoveled the white stuff for 40 minutes. It feels very holiday-ish.

I am caught up with Donna's quilt-a-long. I am having so much fun stitching up these blocks!

Of course, one  of my favorite things about Christmas is decorating the tree. Real, of course. Always a real tree.

Happy Holidays!

Wet Weekend

Happy Monday! Also, Happy Veteran's day to those in the U.S. I've been thinking today about those who have served and those who continue to serve and protect our freedom in the U.S. I heard this great story on NPR this morning about a man who founded an organization, Purple Hearts Reunited, which works to reunite veterans with their purple hearts that were either lost or stolen. A feel good story indeed.

How was your weekend? Ours was wet and windy. Winter is on its way! Sadly, I didn't get many photos due to there being no sun. But I did snap a couple.

The mess on my cutting mat. I do love cutting up small bits of sweet prints.  Ooh, how I love Scrumptious by Bonnie and Camille! You'll see some of it peeking out in the picture above. It's what sweet quilt dreams are made of. ;)

I finished block 4 of Donna's quilt-a-along.  I love a good Churn Dash block! I'm having such fun stitching these up. There's still time to join!

Hope you have a wonderful week!

Sunday

What a pretty day it was today.  After the blustery, and rainy Friday and Saturday, it was definitely colder today but the sun was out.  Tex took advantage of a sunny window.

I've been working on my quilt blocks for Donna's quilt-a-long. Today was a nice day to hang them on the line for a photo!

The block on the left is week one's block, the center is week 2 and the right is week 3. I'm having such fun stitching these up!

I have been working on these 16 patch blocks for several weeks, but I wasn't sure what to do with them. As of today I had 25 so I decided to sew them all together for a square, baby sized quilt.  I squared them up to 8 inches each, and then sewed them together 5 by 5.

The boys wanted outside today. I let them about for about 5 minutes to explore.

If Harry had his way, he'd be out all the time!

I hope you enjoyed your weekend too! What are you working on lately?

Wednesday

Is it just me, or are the weeks flying by?? It's another Wednesday and I have multiple projects in progress, as usual.

I am sewing along with Donna at Donna's Lavendar Nest, and participating in her quilt along. It's not too late to join! This is block 1, and the instructions for block 2 were just posted today.

I am also working on some more dachshund mug rugs for my Etsy shop. They are popular and I do appreciate each of my customers who purchase them, whether for gifts or to keep for themselves. Thank you!! They are fun to make as well! The next bunch should be listed in the shop in the next week.

Lola enjoys sitting on "her half" of the couch. She keeps me company while I sit and stitch at night on whatever hand project I have in the works.

Meanwhile, Harry likes taking over Lola's bed, which is placed right in front of a heat vent.

Speaking of cats, are you familiar with Henri, le chat noir? A friend at work just introduced me to him, and I cannot get enough! Check him out!

Snapshots from the past

It was a good summer at the flea market. Or should I say season at the flea market, as I made my last visit there yesterday.  It's getting cooler here in the northeast and yesterday morning at the flea market was...dare  I say it, cold.

I just love collecting and looking at old photos and postcards. I always imagine what the circumstances were surrounding the photos. Was it a special day? What was the occasion? Of course we will likely never know but it is fun to think about.

I bought the photo above yesterday. It was in a box that contained mostly postcards. In fact, though you cannot tell from the photo because I cropped it a bit, the photo is actually a photo postcard. On the back is the name of the photographer, and his location...Crystal beach, Ontario.  Likely a vacation for the two women. I like that they are both smiling, and I detect a family resemblance. Perhaps mother and daughter?

This photo is another favorite. I purchased it over the summer and found it in a large box of photos.  The women are modeling their homemade aprons. I like that at the very bottom of the photo you can see a dusting of snow.

A happy couple. I love the woman's coat. Looks wintry in the photo. My gut says it was taken in the 1920's though we'll never know, as it is not dated.

Who doesn't like a girl and her dog? I also like the woman's hair in the photo.

I really like this sweet girl having a tea party in the rose garden. Just lovely. My paternal grandmother kept a beautiful rose garden.  This photo reminds me of her.

This is an old postcard that I also picked up yesterday. I love the illustration of the beach at Saint-Malo. The post card is unused so I am not sure of the circumstances or date. Perhaps it was purchased as a souvenir. To remember.

I hope you have a great week! Back soon with some sewing updates!

Homecoming

Last weekend I headed down to my undergraduate college for homecoming weekend. I also attended my sorority chapter's celebratory banquet marking 25 years on the campus.  It was wonderful to see old friends, many of whom I hadn't seen in 10 years. For many of us, we picked up where we left off all those years ago.

When walking around the campus, I was surprised at how small it feels now. Not the size it felt all those years ago...

What a beautiful place Fredonia is. It was a wonderful place to grow up and I'm proud to be one of it's graduates.
