Year End

Leave it to me to wait until the 11th hour...well, 10th actually to do a year end post. I am usually such a planner but this year things have seemingly been extra busy, thus this post coming 2 hours before 2011 comes to an end. I have been reflecting on the last year....the ups, the downs, the challenges, the successes and I've been blessed overall with a very good year.

Right about now I have the oldie "Calendar Girl" singing in my head..."January, we start the year off fine..February you're my little valentine..."Here we go!

In January I started the pickledish quilt-a-long. Sadly, I have only finished 1 block. Must work on this one in 2012!
In February, Lola really enjoyed her walks to the duck pond. Lovely weather...perfect for walking.
In February I also stitched this wee deer. I still haven't done anything else with him. Sad, I know. Must finish in 2012!
At some point in early 2011 I became a Farmer's Wife!

I've completed 50 blocks at this point, and my progress has slowed. I haven't made any blocks in 2 months. Must get back on the horse, err quilt-a-long, in 2012! ;)I spent another lovely year with 2 darling kitties. Here's Harry in March.
And Tex in April.
In May I went on a cruise with these fine fellas...
Yes, they were on the cruise! Not just a cardboard image of them ;)

In fact, here's one now....;)
I made new friends...
Yoga on the Lido deck with Jordan? Yes, please! :)
And I spent time with old friends in paradise.
In May I also did a little stitching...lest you think I only chased a boy band around ;).
At the end of May, on my way home from a lovely trip to Buffalo, my mom and I saw this double rainbow. First one I've ever seen. Lucky indeed.
The trip to Buffalo was so nice. Here's a shot of me and Lola downtown on Elmwood.
Everything was so green!
It was nice to see family while in town. We went for fish fry one night with aunts and cousins. Buffalo has the best fish fry!
While I was there, I admit I did see my favorite boy banders....;).
Just in case you think I only saw one band this summer, I assure you I did not! I took myself to see Taylor Swift in June. It was just me and a bunch of screaming pre-teens, with some parents. But it was a great time!
In July, I readjusted my priorities again and saw NKOTBSB together. ;)
Of course I prefer NKOTB alone....just sayin'.
It was nice to see Susan in July to attend the concert at Amway Arena in Orlando. Good friends and good times indeed.
In August I turned another year older. It happens, I guess ;). Mom made me a great cake. Thanks mom!

Later in August I made a trip up to Boston and a good friend met me there. It was such lovely weather and such fun wandering around the Commons and Garden.

*GASP* A finished object!! I sewed up this Sherbet Pips quilt in September. I love the way it turned out! I decided to list it in my shop....though I was tempted to keep it!

In October I got into making apple pies. I must have made 3 or 4. Yummy.
In November I started Swooning....Sadly, I've only made 1 block. This one is definite must finish in 2012!

Still with me? We're coming to the end of the post. Cheers if you're still reading!

In November I flew to Detroit to see who other than my teenage dream. It was a fantastic time. I saw a new-ish friend, and made some new friends. Here we are at the after partay....

And it wouldn't be right to not include the man himself. ;)
2011 definitely had it's ups and downs but I like to focus on the ups. Yes, definitely the ups. I am so thankful for my family and friends, my health, and the opportunities I had in 2011. I made a big decision last year December to leave my job, and my current career field, and to go back to school. In January I started taking classes at our local state college, and then in July I started in the Dental Assisting program. I've learned a lot about myself, made new friends, and acquired new skills in a field that I never dreamed I would be interested in, let alone pursue. For all this I am thankful.

My journey continues in 2012 as I finish school in June, and finalize plans to move. More school is quite possibly in my future as I feel myself drawn to dentistry. More to come!

For now, thank you dear readers for visiting this space. I truly appreciate the comments more than you know! I wish you all the best in 2012.

My Heart is ravisht with delight,
when thee I think upon;
All Grief and Sorrow takes the flight,
and speedily is gone;
The bright resemblance of thy Face,
so fills this, Heart of mine;
That Force nor Fate can me displease,
for Old long syne.

Christmas Gift Round Up

I had a merry time sewing up Christmas gifts this year. The downside to sewing gifts for people is that one can't show to much of the detail on a blog should the receivers of said gifts be reading! ;) Without further adieu....

A mini quilt for a faraway friend in Canada...
Another mini quilt for a friend in Utah...
A cross-stiched ornament...
And a mug cosy for a friend in Arizona...
A dresden pin cushion for a friend in Philadelphia. I used Mary at Molly Flanders' tutorial to sew a couple of these this holiday. Thanks Mary!
A set of coasters for a friend's mother...
And another sweet pincushion for my mother. Boy, these were so fun to make!
What gifts did you make that you were so excited to give this holiday?

11 Things

My friend Miki at Miki's Scrapbook tagged me in this fun post. Sadly, I created it yesterday but Blogger wasn't cooperating, and the format got mixed up. So, I have decided to post a modified version of it today. I know it's the holiday season and some peeps are still quite busy so I won't tag anybody. This is more of a get-to-know-me post. Here goes....

11 facts about me

1. I was born in San Francisco. Like Tony Bennett sings, I left my heart there. ;)

2. I have lived in many states including New York, California, Massachusetts and North Carolina. I am currently living in Florida but I hope to change that in 2012!

3. I am currently in the midst of preparing to make a career change. I am in school for Dental Assisting now but have decided that I want to become a dentist.

4. When I was growing up in Northern CA we didn't have a car. Amazing the places one can travel by bus or train.

5. Aside from sewing, quilting, and crocheting I like to bake! I like to bake pies, cakes and cookies. Always a reason to bake a treat, I say. ;)

6. When I was in college many moons ago (for the first time...ha, ha), I majored in French. So I suppose I am bi-lingual.

7. I dream of going to Paris. Someday.

8. One of the best things I ever bought, and one of my biggest purchases to date, is my Bernina sewing machine.

9. I have 2 dear cats, Tex and Harry, and 1 dog, Lola (though the dog really loves my mom best...ha, ha).

10. Three of the most beautiful places I've ever been are: Sedona, AZ, Santa Catalina Island, CA, and Half Moon Cay, Bahamas. I love traveling to new places.

11. I love making new friends!

Now to answer Miki's questions!

1.- What has been your favorite purchase of the year?

My favorite purchase....hmmm. I buy a lot of fabric, does that count? LOL ;)

2.- Is there any brand you're loyal to?

2I am not necessarily into brands but I bought my first MacBook last year, and recently upgraded to an iPhone 4 so I suppose I'm loyal to Apple.

3.- What's the messiest room/area in your house?

Ha, ha. I jokingly call the coffee table in front of the couch "the studio" because it's always covered in embroidery projects, quilting magazines, and sometimes other quilty items with binding waiting to be tacked down. It's an "organized mess". LOL

4.- What book/movie or TV character would you like to be?

Lately, I am really loving Jess on the The New Girl. I think Zooey Deschanel is the bees knees.

5.- Is there a song which perfectly depicts you?

Hmmm....there are many songs I love. Not sure it necessarily depicts me but lately I am really loving Heart of the World by Lady Antebellum.

6.- Can you please name a song you think I don't know? (Thanks! ;))

I know Miki knows so many songs, this one is a toughie! How about what I'm listening to right now:

I Wished on the Moon by Tony Bennett.

7.- Is there anything you'd like to change about you?

I don't think I'd change a thing about me. I am who I am!

8.- Who was your biggest teenage celebrity crush?

This one's easy: Jordan Knight.

9.- Can you link a TV ad you like?

Definitely the Apple Santa commercial that aired this holiday season!

10.- Is there anything you would never do again?

Hmmm...probably go on a cruise. Boats and I don't get along. They make me green ;).

11.- Name something you're proud of (about yourself).

Definitely all my education.

I hope everyone had a fantastic holiday! I'll be back tomorrow with a post holiday post. :)

Happy Holidays and Such

Here I am stitching away on something that was meant to be a Christmas gift but alas, will not be finished for Christmas this year. Like many others, I had to revise my Christmas "to do" list as the holiday neared, and I realized that all things were not going to be finished this year. I'm okay with that. Now some gifts I had started will be done in time for birthdays in 2012. I am now patting myself on the back for being one step ahead on birthday gifts for next year. ;)
I'm also having a great time playing with my feed sack prints and whipping up these mini quilts. Am I the only one, or are minis just awesome?!! I love the instant gratification that comes with making and finishing them.As I was rifling through my vintage papers today I stumbled upon 2 things. The first is a sweet, sweet calendar from 1894 that I acquired at the Long Beach flea market when I was living in California. This is the page for November and December. It is one of my most cherished old items I own. All the illustrations are so charming. Maybe I'll share the other pages in the coming months. :)

The second item is this antique Christmas postcard, likely also bought in California. It may be on the romantic side, but I love to think about days gone by when people would send each other sweet postcards like this one to wish each other well. I also appreciate the sentiment expressed on this particular card. The idea that though we may not have the means to share gifts with everyone we know, the true meaning of Christmas is simply to love and appreciate one another.

I hope everyone is enjoying preparing for the holiday weekend, and I wish you well dear readers!

More Super Secret Sewing

I've been busy at it again! Actually I finished up a couple more things yesterday and got them packaged up and sent off to their destinations. After Christmas I'll do a proper post with photos to show the goodies in their entirety!

I've also been doing some not-so-secret cutting!I tried to get Tex to help me but he was too busy napping ;).
So here we have 2 neat little, err, large-ish rows of squares. I find that I start cutting and then I.can't.stop.cutting. I mean I keep finding more and more fabrics I want to add to the row! Does this happen to you, too?
The smaller ones are destined to become mini quilts and the larger, 5 inch squares baby sized quilts. Yay for sewing!
It's funny, here we are 1 week until Christmas, and while I do enjoy the holiday (I'm watching The Bishop's Wife while I type this), I'm also excited to make some non-holiday things!

Tell me what you've been making!
